MPXV structure
Overview of MPXV
MPXV formerly known as monkeypox virus, is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus within the family Poxviridae.
MPXV is the causative agent of mpox, a zoonotic disease characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, skin lesions, and systemic symptoms. In recent years, global outbreaks of mpox have increased scientific interest in viral transmission mechanisms, host-virus interactions, immune responses, antiviral strategies, and vaccine development.
Unlike many DNA viruses, orthopoxviruses replicate entirely within the cytoplasm of infected cells. MPXV contains a large double-stranded DNA genome encoding more than 200 viral proteins involved in viral entry, replication, assembly, immune modulation, and host adaptation.
Among these viral proteins, A35R, A29L, M1R, B6R, E8L, and F3L are important research targets widely investigated for antigen characterization, antibody development, vaccine studies, and immunological analysis.
MPXV Structure
MPXV is a large and complex enveloped virus with a characteristic brick-shaped or oval morphology.
The viral particle consists of:
- Outer lipid envelope
- Viral membrane proteins
- Protein capsid structure
- Core containing viral DNA genome
- Viral proteins involved in replication and immune regulation
The MPXV genome is a linear double-stranded DNA molecule of approximately 197 kb and encodes a large number of proteins involved in viral replication, host immune evasion, and viral particle formation.
