Abstract
Background: Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising nanomaterial for biomedicine, but its effects on the inflamed intestine are not well-studied. This research explores GO's impact on intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and colitis.
Results: GO exhibited dose- and time-dependent cytotoxicity on NCM460 cells, disrupted lysosomal function, and impaired autophagy flux. In a DSS-induced colitis mouse model, GO exacerbated inflammation, decreased colon length, and caused severe pathological changes.
Conclusion: GO induced autophagy dysfunction in IECs and aggravated colitis in mice, suggesting that GO may contribute to the development of intestinal inflammation.
